Long Black Veil is a difficult novel to get into because the author immediately introduces about eight characters known only by their first names – and since several of the first names are non-gender-specific nicknames, it is difficult even to be certain at first of the sex of some of the characters/5.

"A darkly suspenseful, fast-paced and nuanced character-driven novel with gothic undertones, Long Black Veil explores gender and identity, the loyalty of friends and family, and the price demanded by the present for the long-held secrets of the past." — ShelfAwareness/5(87).

"The Minister's Black Veil", as it first appeared in " The Minister's Black Veil " is a short story written by Nathaniel Hawthorne.

It was first published in the edition of The Token and Atlantic Souvenir. It was also included in the edition of The Token and Atlantic Souvenir, edited by Samuel Goodrich. Du Bois argues that the Veil prevents white people from seeing black people as Americans, and from treating them as fully human.

At the same time, the Veil in turn prevents black people from seeing themselves as they really are, outside of the negative vision of blackness created by racism. PUBLISHERS WEEKLY Moody's first foray into nonfiction is a curious amalgam of family history, literary criticism and recovery memoir.

The title refers to Nathaniel Hawthorne's "The Minister's Black Veil," which, according to Moody, is based on the true tale of a Moody ancestor who wore a veil throughout his adult life as penance for accidentally killing his boyhood friend.

The Minister's Back Veil is a parable or allegory because is contains a moral message. When Hooper first puts on the black veil, everyone expects it. In The Black Veil, his alcohol abuse, his explosive, codependent relationship with an ex-girlfriend (called Jen in the book) and the psychic dark hole that resulted in his hospitalization in Hollis, Queens, is prefaced by incidents from his superficially comfortable upbringing in Darien, Connecticut.

The black veil is the inherent symbol of the minister’s sin, but it can also represent how terrible human nature can be. The black veil can represent the secret sin that, not just the minister, but everyone can carry with them.

However there is also the assumption that it is a representation of a specific sin Reverend Hooper has committed. The veil affects the wedding in a gloomy way. The author said it could bring nothing but evil upon the wedding. He said, "But the bride's cold fingers quivered in the tremulous hand of the bridegroom, and her deathlike paleness caused a whisper that the maiden who had been buried a few hours before was come from her grave to be married.".
